The White House VillaProudly laid on a promontory at the edge of the sea, the White House, the most famous House in Corfu retains its authentic character since Lawrence Durrell lived with his wife Nancy from 1935-1939 and wrote the best seller “Prospero’s Cell”.
The White House is a simple accommodation with the charm of the traditional village house, carrying the precious legacy of the Durrell’s writing. Describing the house Lawrence wrote: “... The rooms look lovely and gracious with their white-washed walls, and the few bright paintings and books. The windows give directly on the sea, so that its perpetual sighing is the rhythm of our work and our sleeping. By day it runs golden on the ceilings, reflecting back the bright peasant rugs - a ship, a gorgon, a loom, a cypress-tree; reflecting back the warm crude pottery of our table...” The White House Villa sleeps up to 8 people and is on the upper floor of the building with a small balcony overlooking excellent full views to Kalami bay.
White and brown are the prominent colours in all the decorations. The biggest open space inside the White House is the lounge and dinning area together, reaching from one side of the House (the entrance) to the other (the balcony). Three settees, plenty of bamboo armchairs and many small tables, decorate the room, providing plenty of resting space. A big firm wooden table that Lawrence used to have as his desk, some chairs and two wooden benches make the dining table of the White House. The newly installed French doors open up the balcony to share the privileged views of the sea, with the rest of the house. This small balcony is literally over the sea, making morning breakfast and evenings a delight. KitchenIs very well equipped kitchen with a kettle, toaster, toast maker, coffee and washing machine, a big fridge / freezer and a full cooker. BedroomsThe White House in Kalami Corfu, has four twin bedrooms, one bathroom and one shower room (hairdryer is included). All of them have immediate access to the lounge, kitchen and sitting area. All rooms are spotlessly clean. The bedrooms are adequately equipped and have ceiling fans. The bathroom and shower room are spacious.
